Research Partners and Projects
Together Pressure/vacuum relief valve Pressure/vacuum relief valve is an umbrella term that includes pressure or vacuum relief valve as well as pressure and vacuum relief valve. with our partners in research we are looking for innovative solutions. We jointly develop new solutions for a wide range of applications, test special process configurations and do research work in gas applications.
Research Assignments
Explosion Explosion Abrupt oxidation or decomposition reaction producing an increase in temperature, pressure, or in both simultaneously. hazards can occur in various applications and are often not easily avoidable. For this reason, the use of Flame Arresters Flame Arresters A flame arrester, deflagration arrester, or flame trap is a device or form of construction that will allow free passage of a gas or gaseous mixture but will interrupt or prevent the passage of flame. is always required to reduce the consequences to a minimum and ensure safe process safety.
The wide range of applications is also reflected in our research projects in various fields:
- for aeroplanes, helicopters and motor cars
- for renewable raw materials and alternative energies
- for applications with special fluids
- for applications with oxidising agents other than oxygen
- for applications with higher than normal levels of oxygen
Current Research Projects at the PROTEGO® Test Site

Development of a Test Method for Detonation Flame Arresters
- Development of a testing method for Flame Arresters to ensure protection against detonations at higher pressures before ignition
- Research Partners: BAM, PTB, IBExU, Kito

Flame Arresters for Hydrogen
- Fundamentals of explosion protection Explosion protection An explosion protection is a flame arrester that prevents flame propagation into plant sections to be protected during explosions. decoupling through composite materials to ensure safety along the value chain of innovative hydrogen technologies
- Research Partners: EAH, PTB, Haver&Boecker, R.Stahl

Explosion Protection
Development of a new safety concept for the installation conditions of Flame Arresters Flame arrester Device fitted to the opening of an enclosure, or to the connecting pipe work of a system of enclosures, and whose intended function is to allow flow but prevent the transmission of a flame. dependent on pipe isometry, for integration into industrial plants.

Flame Arresters for Hydrogen - Oxygen - Mixtures
- Development of Flame Arresters for H2-O2 mixtures through precise manufacturing, new geometries, and experimental test series
- Successful example: Hydrogen terminal at Braunschweig Airport

Tank Breathing
First-time research on various influencing parameters of tank breathing, such as condensation, with the aim of optimal design of tank breather valves to avoid over-dimensioning.
Project Partners: TU Magdeburg and CSE with scientific supervision of a doctoral thesis

Endurance Burning: Non-pure hydrocarbons
- Safety concepts for substances such as (bio-)methanol, (bio-)ethanol, and ethanol-containing fuels
- Safety concepts for non-pure hydrocarbons must be specifically designed and tested (requirements for construction and material)
