End-to-End Protection for Tank Farms, Vent Headers, and Vapor Combustion Systems
The protection concept illustrated here combines pressure and vacuum relief with explosion Explosion Abrupt oxidation or decomposition reaction producing an increase in temperature, pressure, or in both simultaneously. safeguarding across the vapor collection network. Tank farms connected to gas vent header systems are protected alongside shared ventilation from industrial mixers and process vessels.
Flame protection at the vapor cumbustion unit is applied at defined distances of potential ignition sources and arranged with parallel capacity to support availability during servicing or abnormal operating conditions. Vapor pipelines leading to vapor combustion units are safeguarded, as are pressure-resistant radial blowers operating in hazardous areas.
This coordinated approach supports stable operation across interconnected systems while helping facilities maintain safety and regulatory compliance under both normal and upset conditions.
Typical Protection Points Within Processing Facilities
Each protection point is selected based on its location within the vapor handling network and its exposure to pressure, vacuum, or ignition risks. Across the processing layout, protection is applied at several critical interfaces:
- Pressure and vacuum control on tanks and vessels using deflagration Deflagration Explosion propagating at subsonic velocity (EN 1127-1:1997). - and endurance burning Endurance burning Stabilized burning for an unlimited time. -proof diaphragm Diaphragm A diaphragm is a thin layer of material, which has a large surface area. valves
- In-line Detonation Detonation Explosion propagating at supersonic velocity and characterized by a shock wave (EN 1127-1: 1997). Flame Arresters installed within vent header connections
- Flame Arresters Flame Arresters A flame arrester, deflagration arrester, or flame trap is a device or form of construction that will allow free passage of a gas or gaseous mixture but will interrupt or prevent the passage of flame. positioned upstream of vacuum pumps, compressors, and blowers
- Deflagration Flame Arresters Deflagration flame arrester Flame arrester designed to prevent the transmission of a deflagration. It can be an end-of-line flame arrester or an in-line flame arrester. installed before vapor combustion units

Optimal product selection
One thing I have learned is whenever faced with a difficult tank venting problem – call PROTEGO®. They know what they are doing. Their products work, and work often way better than they say. Our plant wouldn’t try to install another vent without going to these guys.
